If you’re taking a photograph of a sunrise or sunset, you’ll find it’s a more interesting picture if you can include a silhouette somewhere in the photo, whether that’s a stand of trees or a person walking down the beach. If the silhouette isn’t quite dark enough, you can set it as the focus and reduce the exposure.

The rule of thirds

In art, the rule of thirds is a way to make sure you’re getting the right proportions and balance in your photos. The composition of a picture is most compelling if the important objects are positioned about a third of the way in from one edge of the overall image.

Your iPhone has a helpful guide you can turn on to help you better follow the rule of thirds. Go to “Settings” and then “Photos & Camera,” where you’ll see a switch labeled “Grid.” When you turn this on, a 3X3 grid will be laid over the image on your screen. Try to position the most interesting parts of the picture on the intersections of the vertical and horizontal grid lines.
